James Gordon: NDP health care reform to make the system cheaper, more accessible

Friday, August 19, 2011

Ontario’s health care system needs smart, strategic reform. The New Democratic Party, with James Gordon as their candidate, is prepared to tackle the problem.

“I’ve been listening to the people of Guelph talk about their vision for health care, at my Listening Parties, and as I go door to door,” said Gordon. “Accountable, affordable health care is a top priority for the people of our city and our province.“

Listening Parties are part of Gordon’s Summer of Listening, a series of events where residents are invited to share their views and priorities on the issues that are most important to them.

“I’m hearing that our money needs to go to frontline workers- people who are doing too much in too little time. Health care workers are doing their part, it’s time to elect a provincial government that does theirs.”

The NDP platform for health care includes seven key points: invest in frontline care, cut emergency wait times in half, ensure every Ontarian has a family doctor, scrap the Local Health Integration Network system, cut costs to patients, adapt the system to support our aging population, and focus on preventative care.

“As the founder of the Family Mental Health Network, I saw the gaps in our system. By providing access to doctors and early treatment, we can enrich people’s quality of life and save health care dollars at the same time,” Gordon said.

One of the Party’s initiatives will forgive the student debt of new doctors who practice in under-serviced communities.

Gordon is a well known community leader who works in the arts sector.  He has held leadership roles in the Hillside Festival, and the Guelph Civic League. Gordon was also the recipient of the 2008 Mayor’s award for Community Service.

Gordon was nominated by the Guelph Riding Association June 13, 2011.
